Good chiropractic care is child’s play at Flourish Chiro!

Nurturing growth and wellness in our youngest community members with gentle chiropractic care for babies and children

Isn’t it magical how our children seem to bounce back from injuries and illnesses quickly? Don’t we miss the days when joints weren’t so croaky, hips were a bit more wiggly, and simply sitting poorly at a computer wasn’t enough to put our neck out?
What most of us don’t understand is although children seem resilient, the effects of seemingly minor instances like sporting injuries or even ‘gaming stress’ can accumulate over time and cause issues down the track. Ignoring the signs can lead to long-term consequences for our precious children’s musculoskeletal health.
At Flourish Chiro in Applecross, we know you’d do anything for your babies and children to provide them with the care and attention their growing bodies need. We do it too, in fact, we’re all mums here, so we’re pretty practised at ‘the juggle’ too!
We’re also experts in recognising unaddressed issues – sporting mishaps, growth-related issues, or even rheumatic conditions – and treating them gently before they can take a toll on our children’s musculoskeletal health.

Why chiropractic care is a key element in babies’ and children’s development

From their early stages of crawling and pulling themselves up on the furniture to the challenges of pre-pubescence and teenage-hood, our children face various physical demands and stressors that can impact their development. One of our ongoing jobs as parents is to keep an eye on their overall well-being while helping them grow, and ensuring any experiences don’t get in the way of them living their brightest, happiest, most wonderful lives.
While you may think of chiropractic care as a tool to help promote healing after an injury or accident, we actually offer a proactive approach to safeguard babies’ and children’s bodies from harm. From the initial appointment, we work in a non-intrusive way through consults and comprehensive care plans with reporting, which enable us to assess what’s going on with them even if they’re too young or too shy to let us know.
You may think your baby or child doesn’t yet need chiropractic care because they’re so good at ‘bouncing back’ from life, and they rarely complain about ongoing pain. The reality is young people’s developing bodies undergo significant changes, almost daily, which means they need proactive measures to ensure their overall health.
As your child grows up, from toddlers learning to use the playground slide to joining contact sports as teenagers, chiropractic care can help them maintain proper posture, recover faster from injuries, and manage any physical demands required of them as they move through life.

Early intervention is everything!

At Flourish, our highly trained chiropractic team love providing paediatric chiropractic care tailored to children of all ages, from new babies to teenagers. We firmly believe in early intervention and will be happy to meet your newborn!
The techniques we use are specifically designed to be gentle and non-invasive, especially for babies. If your little one has colic, gas, sleeps poorly, or has an undeveloped latch, we can help. Treatment is non-invasive and safe.
So many of our wonderful parents tell us they wish they’d brought their children in earlier before injury or illness led them to find chiropractic care for their children. If we had our way, we’d see all children first at birth, as we’re treating their mother for pre and post natal care and then again as they start rolling over and becoming more active babies – around 3 months old.
By starting chiropractic care at this early stage of your baby’s life, we can be completely proactive in their overall health care and address any imbalances or misalignments early, before they cause a problem for your little one. We use gentle techniques specifically designed for babies and children, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in our clinic.

Teenagers + screens = problem!

Does your child use a screen? Biggest indicator they’re overdue for a chiro appointment… ever! In today’s digital age, children are often glued to screens for extended periods – and it’s not always their fault! Gaming and entertainment, sure, but increasingly children are required to be learning from screens for schoolwork and study. We know excessive screen time leads to poor posture, strained necks, and imbalance in children’s developing spines; exactly what we can help with at Flourish.
If you notice your child standing or sitting with rounded shoulders, if they often look ‘hunched’, or if their head juts forward from their neck, it’s safe to say their neck and shoulders are already being strained. If they’re not complaining of pain from these damaging impacts already, they may be soon. If your child often has headaches or they stand with one hip higher than the other, these can be signs of spinal misalignment – which can start at birth.
When it comes to addressing screen usage and its unhelpful mate, poor posture, simply catching your child at the time and correcting them may no longer be enough. The underlying issues causing the discomfort, such as spinal misalignments and muscle imbalances, require targeted treatment. Through chiropractic alignment, our skilled chiropractors at Flourish Chiropractic can provide the necessary adjustments to realign their spine, alleviate pain, and restore proper function to their growing bodies.

Nurturing healthy lives for babies and children at Flourish Chiropractic

At Flourish Chiropractic, we specialise in providing comprehensive and tailored treatments for children and babies seeking chiropractic care. Our approach focuses on improving posture, addressing underlying causes, and delivering effective solutions to support optimal spinal and overall health. Through gentle spinal adjustments, our skilled chiropractors target misalignments in the spine, promoting proper alignment, and restoring balance within the body. This not only enhances posture but also contributes to overall spinal well being. Additionally, our soft tissue therapy techniques alleviate muscle tension, increase flexibility, and provide vital support for improved posture and ease of movement.
To complement the treatment process, our chiropractors may incorporate personalised exercise therapy plans. These plans include specific exercises and stretches designed to strengthen the muscles that support good posture. By engaging in these targeted exercises, children can gradually enhance their posture and develop stronger core muscles, setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy alignment.
We go beyond the clinic to ensure lasting results. Our team provides ergonomic education, equipping families with knowledge on optimal sitting, sleeping, and lifting positions to minimise stress on posture throughout daily activities. We may also delve into lifestyle factors that may impact posture, offering valuable insights and guidance for making necessary modifications. This holistic approach considers nutritional imbalances, recommends exercises outside of the clinic, and encourages regular physical activity, empowering your children to make positive lifestyle changes that support improved posture.
We want to see your little ones (even when they’re not so little anymore) shine bright!

Can we assess your baby or children at the clinic to begin?

When you come in for your initial appointment, we’ll provide a thorough consult that can help identify factors such as muscle tension or spinal misalignments that contribute to any issues your children may have. With this knowledge, we’ll create a treatment care plan to target these issues and provide lasting improvements.
You don’t have to wait until any symptoms show up. Book an initial consult and, after a thorough assessment, we’ll help your lovely babies stand tall and flourish throughout every part of their lives!

FAQs for chiropractic adjustments

Chiropractic is a health-care profession that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body, and their connection to the nervous system. The word “chiropractic” means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system.

Chiropractic care can help to alleviate pain by: restoring spinal biomechanics; correcting dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system; encouraging normal joint motion; and reducing muscle spasm.

Chiropractic care has been deemed “remarkably safe” by a number of research studies and government inquiries, with an excellent safety record. In relation to the care-plan for the  neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. Research also shows that chiropractic care is more effective, more economical and gives longer lasting results for disorders of the spine than other forms of health care.

Chiropractic care can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more.

In most cases, you do not need a referral from your primary care doctor to see a chiropractor. However, your insurance company may require a referral in order to cover the cost of your solution.

Many insurance plans cover chiropractic care, but coverage varies depending on the specific plan. It's important to check with your insurance company to find out what is covered under your plan.

Children are very physically active and experience frequent falls when learning to walk or to ride a bicycle, and various injuries through participation in sports. Symptoms of back and neck pain can often be alleviated with chiropractic care, which is adapted to be very gentle in the case of children. Chiropractors are able to identify and look after health complaints related to children.

Chiropractic techniques that involve gentle techniques to help with the hips and movement of the low back are effective in reducing pregnancy related pains and correcting pelvic misalignment. Mothers undergo a myriad of changes to their body throughout pregnancy, such as weight gain, postural changes, and hormonal adoptions, which all increase stress on the low back. Chiropractors specifically analyse and adjust the sacrum, pelvis, and associated muscles and ligaments allowing for optimal range of movement in the lower back and pelvis, and minimised tension throughout the uterine and pelvic cavities throughout pregnancy. Many expecting mums choose to receive regular chiropractic check-ups and adjustments throughout pregnancy.

During your first chiropractic visit, your chiropractor will conduct a thorough evaluation of your health history, perform a physical examination, and may order diagnostic tests such as x-rays. Based on this evaluation, your chiropractor will develop a personalised care-plan.

Chiropractic adjustments are usually pain-free, in fact many people find having a chiropractic adjustment relaxing. Your level of comfort will depend on your injury, the amount of inflammation and the level of tension in the affected area. Most patients experience immediate relief after experiencing a chiropractic adjustment, while others notice mild tenderness and/or tension as their body's alignment and mobility are restored.

The number of chiropractic visits you will need depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Your chiropractor will develop a personalised care-plan that takes into account your individual needs and goals.

A chiropractic adjustment is a very safe, specific, controlled force applied to a joint to restore proper function and mobility. Accidents, falls, stress or overexertion can negatively impact your spine or other joints. These changes impact tissues, the nervous system and other areas of the body. Left unresolved, this can make you more susceptible to chronic problems. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pain, increase movement and improve performance.

The sound often heard during a chiropractic adjustment is called a cavitation. The sound is caused by a release of gas from the joint fluid, known as 'synovial fluid,' occurring when the joint is adjusted (much like the noise that comes from gas as you open a fizzy drink). Some patients consider an audible pop necessary for their care-plan to be successful, while others prefer their adjustments to be performed without any audible cavitation.

Your first visit to the clinic will include discussing the nature and history of your health, after which a thorough chiropractic, neurological and orthopaedic examination will be performed. If your condition is more complex, x-rays may also be required before the chiropractic solution is provided.

One of the best things about chiropractic care is that it can be extremely versatile. We have a wide range of gentle techniques which are perfect for helping people of all ages improve their mobility, vitality and endurance. Many patients find that gentle mobilisations help to ease the pain of osteoarthritis and joint replacements.

Yes, our chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat spinal problems. In fact, chiropractors treat conditions that affect the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and more. Chiropractic adjustments are often used to help restore proper alignment and function to the spine, which can alleviate pain, improve mobility, and promote overall health and wellness. If you are experiencing concerns, it may be helpful to consult with a chiropractor to discuss your solution options.
